About Us

Our History

Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church was established in April 1980 under the leadership of Pastor Albert George Simmons, initially gathering in the home of Brother and Sister Johnnie Sales due to the absence of a dedicated worship space. Services were conducted at various members' homes until Pastor Wess Owens of Greater Christian Hope Baptist Church graciously offered their cafeteria for gatherings. Through diligent efforts, including weekly dinners sales among members, funds were raised towards acquiring a permanent location.

Pastor Simmons eventually secured a rental property for the church at 3502 Chenevert, Houston, Texas 77004, where Mt. Moriah flourished under his unwavering preaching and the divine blessings of growth. Despite challenges like building maintenance issues, Pastor Simmons and the congregation remained steadfast in their devotion, continuing to worship and serve their community.

Divine providence smiled once more as the church relocated to a more suitable venue at 3413 Elgin, Houston, Texas 77004, where it presently stands. With a determined resolve, the congregation worked towards owning the property outright, a goal achieved through the grace of God. Positioned in Houston's Third Ward community, Mt. Moriah is dedicated to fulfilling their Pastor's directive to illuminate, effect change, and, above all, nurture disciples.

Pastor Albert George Simmons

Pastor Albert George Simmons, a devoted servant of God and Jesus Christ, was born on August 1, 1935, to Archie and Girtrude Simmons in Booth, Texas.

Raised in a household deeply rooted in faith, Pastor Simmons was immersed in church life from an early age. His parents, both fervent believers, instilled in him a profound reverence for the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Relocating to McNair Station in 1945, Pastor Simmons became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in 1948, under the guidance of Pastor I. H. Gordon. Completing his education at George Washington Carver High School in 1956, he subsequently served in the Air Force for four years, receiving an honorable discharge.

In 1964, Pastor Simmons entered matrimony with Mildred Davis, and from their union, they were blessed with three daughters: Althea, Deberia, and Girtrude.

The transformative moment in Pastor Simmons' life occurred on New Year's Eve in 1966 while seated in a club. Encircled by loved ones, a divine revelation illuminated his surroundings, prompting God's message: "Go tell my people I love them." Responding to this call, Pastor Simmons joined Ship of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, initially serving as a Sunday School teacher and later as a member of the Deacon board.

On a significant Sunday in July 1976, Pastor Simmons acknowledged his divine calling to preach the gospel. Delivering his inaugural sermon, titled "God Loves You," in August 1976 at Ship of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, he embarked on his journey as a preacher. Subsequently, he transitioned to Greater Christian Hope under Pastor Wess Owens' leadership for eight months before assuming the role of pastor at True Mission Missionary Baptist Church in 1978.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, Pastor Simmons founded Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on April 18, 1980, gathering initially in the home of Deacon Johnny and Sister Sales. Through unwavering faith and perseverance, the congregation witnessed divine providence, securing a permanent location at 3402 Chenevert, Houston, Texas.

In 1994, Pastor Simmons experienced the loss of his first wife, Sister Mildred Simmons, who was called home to glory. Yet, God, in His boundless love and mercy, bestowed upon him another companion, Sister Delores Williams, whom he married in 1997.

As Mt. Moriah continued to thrive, God blessed them with a new sanctuary at 3413 Elgin Street, Houston, Texas, in 1999.

Today, the mission of Mt. Moriah remains steadfast: to nurture the spiritual growth of its members, embodying the presence of Jesus Christ within and radiating His light to the world. United in purpose, they strive to make a difference and cultivate discipleship, illuminating the path of faith for all.
